Most people are unaware of the ingredients because the tobacco companies hadn't disclosed this because they claimed that it is part of the "flavor" and it its formulation is a "trade secret". Also, tobacco is not a food, so it is was never regulated by the FDA. Due to the high rate of illnesses associated with smoking, Big Tobacco was forced to release a list of ingredients. Many of the ingredients are put into the tobacco to help speed up the drying process and protect the crops from insects. The rest, like pig urine (urea), is added for "flavor". Tobacco companies do not care if the product is Halal, and it seems that most Muslims are too ignorant to notice that cigarettes do not have a Halal symbol. It is Sunnah to always ask what is in something before you consume it.

Just like when people are trapped in a burning building, the smoke that people inhale is what causes death. With cigarettes, it's just a slower process of dying. The poisons within cigarettes are just as Haram as intentionally inhaling smoke. Pig products, animal products that were not slaughtered Islamically, and alcohol are Haram to touch or inhale or eat. This is a fact that no scholar of Islam will dispute about.

Sahih Bukhari Volume 7, Book 71, Number 670:

Narrated Abu Huraira:

The Prophet said, "Whoever purposely throws himself from a mountain and kills himself, will be in the (Hell) Fire falling down into it and abiding therein perpetually forever; and whoever drinks poison and kills himself with it, he will be carrying his poison in his hand and drinking it in the (Hell) Fire wherein he will abide eternally forever; and whoever kills himself with an iron weapon, will be carrying that weapon in his hand and stabbing his abdomen with it in the (Hell) Fire wherein he will abide eternally forever."

وَأَنفِقُواْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللّهِ وَلاَ تُلْقُواْ بِأَيْدِيكُمْ إِلَى التَّهْلُكَةِ وَأَحْسِنُوَاْ إِنَّ اللّهَ يُحِبُّ الْمُحْسِنِينَ

English: "And spend of your substance in the cause of Allah, and make not your own hands contribute to (your) destruction; but do good; for Allah loveth those who do good." (2:195)

Most E Cigarettes contain alcohol or animal ingredients. At least Virgin Cigarette is a Muslim owned company that offers an alternative to Muslims who fear Allah (azza wa jal) and want to avoid evil.
